Announcing The Shayne and Robyn Hateley Scholarship

St Hilda’s College is very excited to announce a new set of needs-based access scholarships for regional/rural students that will be available to incoming students from 2024.

We have been humbled by the incredibly generous gift from Shayne and Robyn Hateley, two of our alumni from the 1980s.

The Shayne and Robyn Hateley Scholarships will be made available to four commencing students at the start of each academic year, providing half-fee remission over the full three-year journey at college. By 2026, the scholarships will be supporting 12 students per year.

Having come to St Hilda’s from the small regional town of Stawell, Shayne and Robyn were motivated to give back so generously to the next generation of Hildarian’s. Reflecting on their own life-changing journey through college, Shayne and Robyn are keen to support those who could not otherwise afford access to the transformational experiences available for young people who come to us from regional or remote areas.

Having carved successful careers in dentistry and physiotherapy, the Hateley’s have reserved half of these scholarships for students looking to study Science or Biomedicine with a view towards health or psychology. This is an incredible contribution to the future of health services in Australia. The remaining half may be awarded to students from across any faculty at the University of Melbourne, an offering which acknowledges the importance of a diverse student cohort within our college community.

To honour the roots of Shayne and Robyn’s own journey to St Hilda’s, all recipients of these scholarships will also hail from a rural, regional or remote area of Australia, with a strong desire to award the scholarships to incoming students who have completed their secondary studies at their local state high school.

We would like to publicly thank Shayne and Robyn for their generosity to St Hilda’s College. This gift is an amazing example of the spirit of Communitas in action and we are incredibly grateful to Shayne and Robyn for the trust that they are placing in us to enact what will serve to be an amazing legacy.

We look forward to working with Shayne and Robyn moving forward and welcoming those new members of the community to St Hilda’s who will be the direct beneficiaries of their wonderful generosity.
