St Hilda’s College would like to congratulate four alumni who have been named in the 2023 Australia Day Honours Lists.

In chronological order (of their Peer Year), we would like to acknowledge:

Professor Emeritus Mary-Jane Gething (PY 1966)

Professor Emeritus Mary-Jane Gething has been named an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia “for distinguished service to biochemistry and molecular biology, to tertiary education, and to the arts”.

Dr Judith Brett (PY 1967)

Dr Judith Brett has been named as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia “for significant service to education and public debate, particularly in social science and politics”.

Mrs Amanda Elliot (PY 1970)

Mrs Amanda Elliot (Amanda Bayles during her time at Hilda’s), has been named as an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia “for distinguished service to the horse racing industry through a range of executive roles, and to the community”.

Ms Merran Kelsall (PY 1972)

Ms Merran Kelsall has been named and Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia “for distinguished service to the financial accounting sector, to professional organisations, and to the community”.

As the website of the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia states, “the Australian Honours and Awards system recognises the outstanding services and contributions of Australians [and] gives the nation a chance to celebrate and acknowledge those who work tirelessly to improve local communities and make Australia a better place”. From a St Hilda’s perspective, this sentiment echoes our own motto of Communitas and we are always proud to see members of our various alumni groups continue to work for the wider community well after they leave our grounds.
